Dissemination

Quinoa is a domesticated plant species, which has exceptional nutritional characteristics (such as the content and quality of proteins, minerals, lipids, and tocopherols) and many traits of abiotic stress resistance. These features determines a growing interest for the quinoa crop by the scientific community and international organizations since they provide opportunities to produce high-value grains in arid, high-salt and high-UV agroecological environments.  Viroplant IPSP-CNR partner, together with researchers from CNR of Milano and from University of Torino, discovered that a mitovirus can help quinoa to face drought conditions. Mitoviruses are cryptic viruses infecting mitochondria, which do not cause obvious symptoms and can provide resilience against abiotic and biotic stress.  Results of this study were published in Biology journal. To read the paper, please go the following link: https://www.mdpi.com/2079-7737/11/1/95/htm.  ...
