Bacterial canker is a major disease caused by different pathovars of Pseudomonas syringae which can seriously threaten cherry production. Spraying with copper has led to bacterial resistance and raised concerns on negative environmental impact. Robert Jackson and Mojgan Rabiey, from University of Birmingham, are studying a safe, sustainable and effective alternative: naturally occurring bacteriophages.
