The School of Biological Sciences (SBS) in the University of Reading is comprised of about 60 academics and 1000 students. Research topics span Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Biomedical Science and Biomedical Engineering. As the first UK University to have a Department of Microbiology, there has been a long tradition of bacterial and viral research. Professor Robert Jackson and Dr Mojgan Rabiey work on both plant pathogens and bacteriophage and they have interests in understanding the fundamental and applied biological characteristics of phage in the context of treating bacterial diseases. For the VIROPLANT project, we will specifically focus on phages that infect Pseudomonas syringae pathogens of stone fruits with the aim of developing a new treatment to reduce disease impacts and improve crop yields.
